New insight into the metabolic interactions in tumours

It has been known for a long time that cancer cells change their metabolic activity. However, the full complexity of metabolic reprogramming in cancer cells and the metabolic cross-talk between cancer cells and their surrounding environment has only recently been fully appreciated.

In a special issue of the journal Disease Models & Mechanisms published this August, Prof. Almut Schulze from the Biocenter has collected review articles that address the different aspects of the metabolic alterations in cancer. This ranges from the regulation of metabolic pathways by oncogenes and tumour suppressors that support the synthesis of cellular building blocks for uncontrolled proliferation to the metabolic competition by which cancer cells block the activation of the immune response. The special issue also features a poster summarising the metabolism of immune cells and interviews with well-known scientists within the field, who tell their very personal stories of discovery. Together, the articles in this special issue provide a broad overview of this exciting research area but also detailed insight into different aspects of metabolic reprogramming in cancer.
